Preventing, Identifying, and Recovering from Identity Theft

As technology and the internet play an ever-increasing role in our daily lives, it causes even more concern over information security and identity theft. You may not recognize that your identity can be stolen in many ways, such as a perpetrator going through your trash; finding a receipt with your account number on it; or even overhearing a phone conversation. By accessing information such as your credit card number, phone number, account number or address, thieves can purchase items, open new accounts or even apply for loans in your name, without your knowledge.

According to CISA, the United States Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency, there are steps you can take to not only help prevent identity theft but also fight back if you’re a victim.

Tips for Preventing Identity Theft
  • Always do business with reputable companies.
  • Take advantage of security features and check privacy policies.
  • Be wary of the private information that you post online.
  • Always be aware of account activity.
  • Make sure to use anti-virus software including a firewall.
Common Signs Your Identity Has Been Stolen
  • Unusual or unexplainable bills coming in the mail.
  • Conversely, if you do not receive regular bills or other mail, that could also be a sign of identity theft.
  • New, unfamiliar accounts on your credit report.
  • Your credit card is unexpectedly declined.
What To Do If Your Identity Has Been Stolen
  • Stay calm and visit the Federal Trade Commission’s website specially designated for those suffering from identity theft: www.identitytheft.gov. Here you will find information on what to do first, what to do second and additional steps you can take to restore your identity. Examples of some steps to take would be to contact companies—including banks—where you have accounts, credit bureaus and the local police.
